‘Over Here’
‘Over Here’ proposes a multi coloured bike rack created to help resolve a common commuter stress for cyclists at London Victoria Station. Commissioned by the LFA and Network Rail, ‘Over Here’ has been designed by in collaboration with the artist Zoë Power.
All cyclists have had this commuter stress. Finally reaching the bike racks, after snaking around a tonne of people, only to find a mangle of bicycles making it impossible to see a free space for you to lock up in the 2 minutes you have to get on your train. ‘Over Here’ proposes a multi coloured bike rack that you can spot a mile off, with a colourful marker above each parking space that indicates when a spot is free.
When parking up the bike’s front wheel pushes a counter weight, which in turn moves forward an artist designed marker that sits above each parking space, which clearly indicates when a stand is in use. The design makes finding a space to lock up quick and easy when rushing for your train.
Each colourful marker is designed by Zoë Power, a Bristol based, mural artist, who’s joyous design add an extra level of playfulness to the proposal. Behind the parking spaces is the bold and playful mural, designed by Zoë, which brings some much needed colour to the stations entrance.
The flexibility of the design is intended to allow different artist to design the parking markers, should the project be continued in other locations in the future. Allowing this small variation will create more site specific designs as the cycle parking is rolled out at other stations across the city.
The stands themselves have been fabricated by Jon Llyod and will be in place throughout the entirety of June 2022 during the London Festival of Architecture.
